The Blockhouse Lake
Association
is
involved in a number of activities and projects designed to gather
information, improve water quality, and enhance the enjoyment of people
using the lake. In 2001, with the assistance of the Price County
Land Conservation Department, the Association applied for a planning
grant from the Department of Natural Resources. The purpose of
obtaining the grant was to create a newsletter, gather historical
information about the lake, conduct a survey of property owners, and
develop this web site. The newsletter is published twice a year,
and contains news, pictures, stories, and information about the lake
and its residents. For the most recent issue, please contact
us.
The property owners
survey was completed in
2002. We found that the main feature that people find attractive
about our lake is the peace and quiet. Click on this summary to learn more about what residents and
visitors like or
dislike about Blockhouse Lake.
Historical information is still being gathered, and will be added to the site when completed. In the meantime we have been collecting recollections, legends, articles and oral histories from a variety of sources. Please visit our stories page for a glimpse of what life was like around Blockhouse Lake in earlier times.
Since excessive plant growth is
considered by many as a problem that reduces enjoyment of the lake, a
committee was formed to research this issue and make recommendations to
the membership. As a first step, an aquatic plant survey was
completed in
the summer of 2003. Visit our plants
page to see what we
found.
The water in our lake is very clean,
and we want to keep it that way. Protecting the quality of the
water means gathering information about it on a regular basis.
Volunteers from our association have been collecting data on the water
in Blockhouse Lake since
2000. Visit our water quality page to

Blockhouse Lake has been known for many
years as a prime fishing spot, and draws anglers from a wide
radius. Ten years ago the Eisenstein Sportsmen's Club initiated
an aeration project on the lake. They supported the operation of
this aerator until relinquishing it in 2003, at which time it was
assumed by the Blockhouse Lake Association. Under the terms of
the agreement, the Wisconsin DNR helps maintain the equipment, and the
Blockhouse Lake Association pays for the power needed to run the air
blower. The association also installs and maintains the fencing
needed to protect the site to prevent accidents during the months when
the aerator is operating. This project has been very successful
in preventing fish die-off during the winter months due to low oxygen
levels. Contributions to this project are always welcome, and
donations may be made at any time by contacting the Treasurer.
